• Leaving a legacy to a charity such as SEFAN is simple•
If you have already made out a will it is simple to add a codicil
(a separate document that forms a legal addition to the will).
If you have not already made out a will we would urge you to do so to ensure your estate is distributed
as you would wish (even if you do not include a legacy to SEFAN!).

SEFAN, like many of its Network members, is a registered charity and is therefore an ideal means
of ensuring that your legacy is put to good use.
Remember that legacies to charities are exempt from inheritence tax.

There are different types of legacy you might include in your will. Below we describe these options and give links to some examples of wording. We do, however, recommend that you consult a solicitor and your other beneficiaries about any will or codicil that you draw up, especially if it affects the residue of the estate.
SEFAN is happy to hold funds in trust and administer them for a designated type of activity. Do visit our donations page for examples of the work that could be supported in this way.

Specific Item: This is where an item is left as a legacy. It may be something of use to others in the Folk/Roots sector, such as PA equipment or instruments, or it may be an item of value such as
jewellery orproperty. SEFAN would either find a suitable recipient group or network member who would make use of the item or sell it and use the proceeds to support our work.
A preference for what should be done with the item may be included in the will or codicil wording.

Specific Sum: This is where a specific sum of money is left to the charity, and is also known as a pecuniary legacy. This may be a fixed amount or index linked. A fixed amount will decrease in real value with time due to inflation, whereas an index linked sum might grow as a percentage of the total estate, and hence diminish the residue. You should only consider making a donation of a specific sum if is likely to be small compared with the residue of your estate, otherwise it might be more appropriate to leave a percentage of the residue (see below).

Residue: This is what is left of your estate after all debts, costs (such as funeral expenses), inheritance tax, specific items and specific sums have been distributed by the executor. You can leave the entire residue or distribute it amongst beneficiaries, with a fixed percentage going to each.
Sample wording for leaving a residuary legacy is provided as a guide, but Wills should always be drawn up by a solicitor and properly witnessed. |

Reversionary Bequest: This is used when a bequest is to take effect only after a surviving partner has been provided for during his/her lifetime. This is an option if a husband and wife wish to eventually leave the residue of their estate to a charity.
It is important to consult a solicitor when making out a reversionary bequest to ensure your wishes and the entitlement of any beneficiaries are expressed properly. |
